History of Caring by the UAW 898 Veteran’s Committee

By George Stoddard, Production Bargaining

We started our committee in 1989 with 10 members. Our first project was the wall plaque at the hall. We did that with the help of the Desert Storm Yellow Ribbon Support Group. We finished it in 1991.

We've raised money for needy vets in Michigan by having golf outings and bowling benefits, twelve years of bowling benefits and six years of golf outings.

Among other things, the money has gone for:

VFW National Home to care for the children and grandchildren of VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members.

A tribute to John Lawson, POW in the Korean War (1950-1953) and active union leader

Hearing display at the VA Hospital of Ann Arbor

Wheel chairs for the VA Hospital of Ann Arbor

Vets who lost their homes to fire

We have had Christmas for vets and their kids at hard times.

We put up a wheel chair ramp for a vet who couldn't do it himself.

I f you have any questions about current veteran issues, just check out our display case on the main isle in Area A.

There are twelve of us now. Five are from the original ten: Jim Wallace, George Stoddard, Cal Ford, Doug Scott and Mike VanWasshnova. The other members of the committee are Don Enersen, Jr and Matt Furtney, co-chairs, Gale Smith, Pete Raymond, Rick Held, Gary Eanes, and Cory Frost.
